Does Malaysia really need to have a professional football league?
Obviously, Malaysian football governance at the so-called "top-level" is always bad "battered" since the very beginning of the professional era - and till today, with no end to the salary problems.
The stupidity and incompetency level are shown crystal clear, by the office bearers of the teams participating. They make life miserable for many human beings involved either directly or indirectly, but surely becoming victims due to the miserable failures of the office bearers - the player's wife, children, parents etc.
“In Malaysia and Thailand, as well as Eastern Europe, where clubs are going bankrupt or are financially unstable, most players prefer to keep quiet about this so they can get another contract. It is an illusion for club officials and footballers everywhere today – they are drawn to the glamour of it without knowing the reality behind it.”
"Yet they still wish to miserably pretend everything is fine and pile up the misery for everyone season after season"
Perspective is understandably coloured by bitter experience. “Football is a very tough business, very harsh. Football fans think it is very pretty, very glamorous but it’s not like that. Contracts are not respected. In some countries, including Malaysia they just sack/offload the player and coaches in a disgraceful manner. Many of the football bosses are in business or government – and some of them are corrupt. Lots of players are afraid to stand up for themselves because they think it will affect their careers. Local football federations and sports ministers must lay down the law and protect the players.”
“Even in Western Europe, it is very hard for players in lower divisions - what more in Malaysia. People think Europe is the holy grail but a lot of lower league players are suffering. It’s a cruel world. Only the strongest survive. The richest clubs should help the poorer clubs. There’s an imbalance in the money.”
The best approach to overcome these financial burdens is to allow teams/clubs to sign players as semi-pro and amateurs with the option of becoming pro along the way if deserving
Currently, every player in the Malaysian top-level football set-ups is considered pros and signed a contract even when clearly not deserving to be pro.
To have a healthy and sustainable football financial, football in Malaysia must seriously consider the options to stay relevant and respectable.
